As social networks increase in popularity continues unabated, more advertisers are looking at how they can promote their products successfully on the vast pool of consumers. A study conducted by Psychster Inc and Allrecipes to find out what forms of advertising worked best for sites like Facebook, Bebo and MySpace.

Facebook Ads
The format of ads that the organisations considered were, banner ads, newsletter subscriptions, corporate profiles with fans and logos, corporate profiles, get widgets, give widgets and sponsored content.
What the survey found was that sponsored adverts where a “bought to you by” caption was included bought about a lot of customers but very little in the way of purchasing. There was a greater response from corporate profiles, and this increased with the inclusion of becoming a fan and attaching a company logo to their home page.
The research also discovered that “give and get” widgets were popular, where users could customise a product and forward it to friends or keep it for themselves but were no more likely to increase buying power.
Their conclusions were that traditional adverts and widgets performed best and their results were even better when included with relevant articles that complemented the campaign. Once again proving the old adage that content is king. Although this did generate the highest sales, it was also perceived as the worst for of intrusive advertising and negative form. For companies seeking to engage and interact with the public more, an open company profile was the better strategy for developing brand awareness.
