Website Usability Checklist
Visitors to your website will more often than not find you through a search engine but once they have discovered you, how usable will you site appear? Here is a checklist to make sure you are not loosing customers out of frustration.
1) Clearly indicated navigation system
Is it obvious to customers where they are, where they want to go and where they have been? Be consistent throughout, use text labels links appropriately don’t leave visitors guessing. Add a text based site map, it helps visitors and search engine spiders.
2) Keep it Simple
Attract the eye, but make sure they get something from their visit, that way you will get them to return. Make pages easy to read, do not put text over images and keep colors and contrast readable. People will not buy, what they cannot read.
3) Brand Throughout
If you have spent time developing a brand, logo, color scheme then make sure your site supports the brand. Have the pages echo the logo; feature your icon across the site. Remind people constantly whose site they are on.
4) Allow Comment
Encourage, develop and allow customer comment, do not be afraid to talk to your customers. Create a feedback form or have an online social network or forum where they can leave messages.
5) Test Your Site
Get people to test your site, see how it runs, and ask others what they think. People who encounter problems will not bother taking time to tell you, they just will not come back.
