Website Usability
When you start designing your website usability should be a first thought not an afterthought. If as you plan, design and map out your site you keep in mind the end user and how the design will affect them, you will not go far wrong.
Ultimately it is the users experience that will dictate the success of your site, so if you start by considering their needs you will find the results a lot more pleasing. Question your choices, how does this help my customers? The simpler they are able to find the answers they are seeking the more popular your site will become.
Evaluate existing websites, how easy are they to use, perform competitive analysis and sketch out on paper possible layouts. Conduct test runs, different customers think in different ways, how versatile is your design.
It will prove far easier and cheaper to make changes to a website’s architecture during the design stage than after the site is up and running. Be clear in your mind as to what are the goals of the site, the users likely needs and collate customer requirements.
Have a clear, crisp content, do not over complicate your site with to many options, and give customers small bite sized pieces of information on which to act. Sign post your site to make sure they know where they are going and how to get back if need be. Have a clean, readable layout, too many “bells and whistles” will slow the site down; distracting and discouraging them from returning.
