If you are a business this is just getting into the whole idea of social media and online business promotion you are undoubtedly confused by many of the terms and acronyms that populate the market. Here is Forescene’s guide to social networking.
App: abbreviation for application and is a small program that performs a specific task on a computer or hand held device.
AstroTurfing: generating interest in a site or product by inducing people to blog or comment for money or gifts.
Avatar: A graphic image of a person made from a photograph.
Badge: An icon that shows that the participant is joining in with a competition, event or particular site
Cluster: Refers to a grouping of similar items, blogs, tags, members interests etc.
Dashboard: Administration screen for a blog.
Flash Mob: Encouraging a group of people to simultaneously meet at a predetermined place by advertising over the Internet, texting or social media.
Geotagging: The process of adding location based information to site, photos and maps.
Lurker: A person who reads social media posts but doesn’t often contribute
Meme: A personal based poll, quiz or survey placed on people’s websites, blogs and news pages.
Poke: The simplest form of communication whereby a message is sent to say someone visited you.
Troll: An inconsiderate person who posts antagonistic or inflammatory remarks on a site.
Webinar: online seminar
Widget: Small additional program that provides information such as weather or news.
