Continuing in our recent tradition of talking about Search Engine Optimization, we came across a few articles regarding Google and the infamous “meta-tag” search engine optimization myth. Alright, we’ll admit that a few years ago, Search Engine Optimization really did just mean filling in meta tags in a website’s source code with the right keywords and setting up a few backlinks. However, as Google just recently posted on their webmaster’s blog, this strategy definitely does not work anymore.
Once search engines figured out the fact that webmasters and spammers were trying to play the organic search system, Major engines like Google, Yahoo, Bing etc., de-emphasized the importance of meta-tags in their algorithms, and today, Google has finally confirmed that the tag has no influence on their search results.
What does this mean for Search Engine Optimization? Is the practice dead? Definitely not, as any seasoned web development firm will tell you, there are hundreds of things to think about when optimizing a website and trying to build its PageRank. Established brands, and even smaller, startup companies are investing thousands to hundreds of thousands of dollars into SEO each year, with specialists working on single websites for months on end before reaching Google page 1.
So what can we get from all of this? Search Engine Optimization is still very much alive, but it needs to be done correctly. Working with a Professional web development firm that knows the industry, and keeps up with the latest technology will definitely help in your SEO efforts.
